The purpose
of the Guitar Master System is to present a legitimate and authentic
approach to the electric and acoustic guitar. There is virtually no
material for the guitarist after he or she has learned the fundamentals
of the instrument. The
system introduced in our books is the creation of the great guitarist
Joe Sgro. The lessons are progressive and
will develop guitarists to a high level of proficiency. The reading
material was originally written for violin and piano by recognized
masters of music. Though it is difficult, the material is fun to play.
The
guitar studies cover four categories:
1. Scales and arpeggios: The scale books come complete in
four volumes. Each book introduces a new set of scales and arpeggios.
You will learn four separate methods of playing scales and arpeggios.
These are the most important and practical forms. There are other
forms, but they are only variations of the four major forms. In
the last section of volume two you will learn the phenomenal three
octaves scale. This is the fingering of Joe Sgro. I have not seen
a more practical way of fingering the three octaves scale. This
will enable the guitarist to play the full range of the fingerboard.
All of the music in our system is based on the scale forms and arpeggios
in our four volume series. The more you are familiar with these
forms, and especially the three octaves scales, the more you will
appreciate and understand the fingering.
2.
Exercises: The Hanon piano exercises are known the world over.
I've transcribed them for guitar, and changed the key to G major.
These are, indeed, the most advanced Hanon studies for guitar. You
will never outgrow these studies. They can not be rushed. You are
trying to build and train the muscles in your fingers, and that
will take a lot of time.
3.
Etude studies: Etude studies are compositions written for the
sole purpose of developing and improving technique. These compositions
were written by revered and eminent masters of the violin and piano.
There is no such material written or composed for pick style guitar.
The book "Not for Beginners" is a compilation of progressive
and beautiful music written by renowned masters of the violin and
piano. These studies will give you years of pleasure. This is serious
music. But you will grow with the music. Other books to consider
in our series is Czerny (The School of Velocity) and Hidden Treasures
by the Masters. Czerny explores the higher register of the fingerboard,
using chromatics and the three octaves scales.
4.
Picking Technique: Most guitarists use alternate picking, which
is a constant down and up stroke of the pick. Ordinarily this is
fine, and the guitar does lend itself to this style of picking.
But another dimension of picking must be added to alternate picking
when playing music of this magnitude. Joe Sgro created a new and
revolutionary picking technique that will take your performance
to a new level. This picking technique is the discussion of many
of the top guitarist, but few people know its principal. For example,
many musical passages should begin with an up-stroke. I call this
reverse alternate picking; this skill alone will greatly enhance
your performance. It will automatically eliminate the complexity
and difficulty of the passage. Guitar Master is the only system
that teaches this phenomenal picking technique. It is very complicated
to understand and perform, especially without a teacher. My purpose
is only to expose you to this system, and, not necessarily to change
your method.
